    Nintendo would definitely not stubborn in what they did with this switch because in an old interview with the late Suturo Iwata for what was gonna happen to the industry with the continued focus on graphics and power and saw that they were diminishing returns in this strategy and it looks like Nintendo was proven right with the current poor state of AAA gaming and the switch again is proof that the most powerful console rarely always wins.

    I'd argue that price and no backwards compatibility were also huge factors as to why a console failed or at least did'nt do as well as the previous one. Not only was the Wii cheaper than the other two, but you could play all of Nintendo's game libary with it at the time. It was backwards compatible with the gamecube and it had the virtual console on it for their previous generations someting both Ps3 and Xbox cut away from their systems. The Wii fumbled sure but the Switch's price is one of the many reasons it's doing so well especially with the Ps5 and Xbox being so damn expensive in comparison. It can't be backwards compatible with the Wii U but I'm sure that's why there's been alot of remasters and remakes for the Switch so people has some way to still play their old games, not to mention old Playstation and Xbox titles have found their way onto it too.

  • @GreyWolfLeaderTW
    @GreyWolfLeaderTW 19 днів тому

    Short Answer: Because graphics are not the most important feature in a console's specifications. Typically it boils down to: How well does this platform support *software* . CD storage tech drove the PS1's success, low production costs for the storage format of games led to low costs for licenses, low costs to produce games (you can produce CDs for pennies per disc as opposed to dollars per cartridge) and thus low royalty rates needed for 3rd Party Software, thus drawing large quantities of developers and their games to the platform. DVD support drove the PS2's success, repeating the strengths of the CD format for the PS1, plus adding support for the then new rapidly-rising physical media format (which is still the dominate video format today, long after blu-ray and 4k discs have shown up). The Wii succeeded on the novelty of motion controls, which attracted a casual crowd outside of the classic hardcore gamer demographic (should be noted the actual hardware capabilities of the Wii are actually around twice that of the GameCube; weaker than the PS3 and Xbox 360 by a notable margin, but people often undersell what its hardware was capable of). The Nintendo Switch's success is riding on the utility of being capable of both a standard console and one that can switch into a handheld console.

    I managed to get hold of a copy of this for my Virtual Boy, and I have to say it really looks the part. The sprites are really well detailed, and look great. Kind of like watching the Arcade version on a Black and Red TV screen. But ultimately I sold my copy, I was short on money at the time, and was disappointed in the way it played,. It feels like it uses a generic fight engine like MUGEN, but it lacks many of the nuances that make Street Fighter the great game it is, mostly in the combos and timings of moves. If you look at King of Fighters 95/96 on the regular GameBoy, even though it has tiny Super Deformed characters, it plays really well, all the moves, timings, combos are there. Which sadly the Virtual Boy version of Street Fighter is lacking. But I imagine for the more casual player, it definitely looks the part, and plays good enough.

    The switch should really be considered as the hybrid device it is. As the successor for the 3DS, it's quite impressive. As the successor to the Switch, it's not. Its handheld status is its main selling point. Without it, the console would've bombed just as the Wii U did. Nintendo was very smart merging their handheld and home console lines in this gen. But because of this, I feel like this console should not be considered part of the pattern. In the gen of PS4 and XBox One, Microsoft really lost peoples' trust and that's a big factor there. This loss of trust still affects them today.

    It's kinda weird how often Atari ST games sound notably worse than their Amiga counterparts, given the ST was really popular with musicians at the time (on account of it's MIDI ports). Or, well, actually, perhaps it's more accurate to say that it's weird the ST was given MIDI ports, but left with a relatively low-grade audio chip. (Apparently it was supposed to have a custom audio chip, which would presumably have been much better, but it just didn't make it in time, so maybe they just had to make do with what they could get.)

  • @AdrianWoodUK
    @AdrianWoodUK Місяць тому

    12:50 - "This is a plug-and-play that released in 2018, but doesn't have HDMI... It's not like HDMI cables are expensive after all." Oh, hi, hello, hi. I think I can help. HDMI cables aren't expensive... But the electronics to output a HDMI signal are, relatively speaking. Aside from the cost in the hardware itself, the HDMI standard is also proprietary, meaning implementing it requires you to pay licensing and per-device royalty fees. That adds up, especially for a novelty device like this where they probably aren't expecting to sell a massive volume. There's possibly another factor at play as well. As you've said, this appears to be a version of Mega Drive SF2. That could well mean the chipset itself is a Mega Drive clone, and the Mega Drive of course did not have native HDMI support, so quite probably the chipset doesn't either. That means giving this HDMI support would essentially mean building in an analogue > HDMI converter, even more electronics (and so even more cost). Basically, it will have been much cheaper and simpler for them to not bother with HDMI.

    • @GeekBattleGaming
      @GeekBattleGaming Місяць тому

      Thanks for the information. They’re all good points, but think if they paid for the license to Street Fighter 2, they should have found a way to go the extra mile to get it to display on modern TVs. No one still was rocking their CRT TVs, so effectively meant this was a product designed for no one by that point in time. Bad reviews lead to worse sales and people would be less likely to get their future products. This was in the same timeframe where the Spectrum Vega was seen as insane for just using component, and all the mini consoles were using HDMI as standard for the same or lower costs. As well as all the cheap and low quality streaming boxes. The bigger issue would have been to get the tech inside to display on HDMI as essentially it’s a mega drive inside, but MSI needed to see the bigger picture as all their plug and play devices needed to have upgraded by this point.

    • @AdrianWoodUK
      @AdrianWoodUK Місяць тому

    4:46 - "Weirdly, in this version Ken has black hair... it's probably just that Ken was palette-swapped from Ryu in the truest sense imaginable, but if they could swap to make his gi red, then why not do a couple of extra pixels so that he's got yellow hair?" Hello, hi there, I think I can answer this. Disclaimer; I am not a C64 expert, but I had an inkling of the possible reason and a quick googling seemed to confirm it. So, you know how on the Spectrum, you have a palette of 8 colours*, but in a given 8x8 square you can only have two? The C64 doesn't have that limitation... As far as I know, nothing else does... but it does have it's own. The one that's important to us is that the C64 has hardware sprite support, and each sprite is limited to having 3 colours (4 including the transparent pixels). Two of those colours are set globally and shared amongst all sprites, and the last one is set individually per-sprite. With that in mind and looking at the footage, the answer's pretty clear. For the two shared colours, they elected for a skin-tone pink, and black. The pink is used for, well, skin, and the black is used for outling the character and drawing other details. That leaves one colour per character to be used for their clothes. For most of the roster that's fine, because they have dark hair and the black can be used for that. For Ken though, you run into exactly the problem you've noticed. Ideally, you need 4 colours; red for the gi, yellow for the hair, pink for the skin, and black for the details and outlines... But you can only have 3. Pink and black can't be changed without changing them for everyone (and you wouldn't want to, as they're pretty fundamental colours for this), so it's got to be either yellow or red. It's possible they tried yellow, but it made the gi and hair blur into each other a bit too much, or was hard to distinguish again the backgrounds, who know. So, yeah; why not throw in a couple of yellow pixels? For the same reason the Speccy version didn't feature more than two colours in each 8x8 square; because they literally couldn't, the hardware didn't allow for it. * OK, yes, technically 16**, but the Bright option is a per-block setting rather than being a set of distinct colours. ** OK, yes, _technically_ 15 in the original specification, with Bright Black being the same as none-Bright Black, even if some versions/variants/clones/emulations have this as a distinct dark grey.

    • @GeekBattleGaming
      @GeekBattleGaming Місяць тому

      Really informative. Thanks for the detailed breakdown. Maybe they should have used flesh tone for Ken’s hair. People would have said he looked bald, but if there was a defined outline separating head from hair this would have sufficed lol

But on harder settings (up to 7), computer "cheats", and doesnt stuck behind your kicks and throws and you have to beat game "regulary." Constant attempt to throw when chatacters are close are because 1 button controls, since, in order to simplify, when close, simple button press results in throw, rather than punch. To be honest, arcade version is also full of glitches! "Floaty" animations are due to the fact that for Amiga and Atari ST, charchters were ripped directly from arcade. Unlike console versions, where developers had large budgets and all documentation, for Amiga and Atari ST version, a group of "bedroom coders" (Creative materials) was given just an arcade machine and one guy manage to make cables and software to rip assets from arcade PCB directly to Amiga and downgrade them for home computers. Who know what else could be done with time and money. Although there were keyboard 2 and 3 button layouts it was still easier to get use to play on 1 button layout! Atari ST lacked hardware scroll and sprites and only had 16 on screen colors and this game should never be possible on that machine but it is to some extent. Also sound chip was afwul 3 chanel Yamaha. Strangely, previous generation of Atari 8 bit computers had 4 chanel Pokey sound chip, sprites and hardware scroll and it's creator was Jay Miner, the same guy who created Amiga with much better sound and hardvare sprites and scrolling and aray of advanced capabilities! Street Fighter II on Amiga should be much better (on ST is a miracle as is) although both computers shared same processor 16bit Motorola 68000 and are introduced in the sane year 1985. Both versions have almost all game tunes but due to 4 disk swaping and graphical asets found on different disks (characters, stages, tunes), to lower the amount of disk swaping, you swap disk to load chatacters and stages but stuck to the same tune. That is why tunes and stages are mixed!

      Thanks for the info! Very informative. I played it on an easier setting before I managed to map controls to a gamepad but then it was a breeze on standard. Will try it on hard to see how much it cheats!
